Tom Hughes plays Mike Rogers and Joanna Vanderham is Ellie – Tamzin Outhwaite appears as Mrs Rogers and Birgitte Hjort Sorensen is Gretta. The acting is a bit lack-lustre for me and I just don’t warm to any of them. I personally found it a bit slow and it’s not one I could watch again and again. Basically – if you’ve read the novel, you wont like the addition of Miss Marple, if you’ve not read the story and aren’t familiar with it – you probably will like it! The novel was one of Christie’s more darker novels and there are some definitely creepy moments in it. The original novel by Agatha Christie did not include Marple so this is the last time we have her character added into the story for the sake of the TV episodes and for me it’s not one that works as well as say ‘Towards Zero’. Characters from Christie’s Other NovelsĪ much more sinister and dark production to end the season with.New Poirot Film 2020 – Death on the Nile Expectations.2001 saw the first radio adaptation which was transmitted on BBC Radio 4 and starred June Whitfield. It was then adapted again in 2006, this time by ITV, for their series Marple which starred Geraldine McEwan. Sleeping Murder was first adapted for television in 1987 as part of the Miss Marple series by the BBC, starring Joan Hickson as Miss Marple. In An Autobiography Christie explains that she ‘had written an extra two books during the first years of the war’ and ‘those two books, when written, were put in the vaults of a bank.’ But in Agatha Christie’s Secret Notebooks, John Curran argues that it was written much later. There is much discussion around when the story was first written. Originally it has been thought that the story was written in the early 1940s, although this has been debated by Christie expert John Curran in his book Agatha Christie’s Secret Notebook in which he discovers that Christie began writing the novel much later. A puzzle that is tortuous, surprising and finally satisfying.
